Turkish police have identified five suspects - four of whom have ties to the Saudi crown prince - in the investigation launched into the disappearance and alleged murder of prominent journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to a US media report.

Saudi Mr Khashoggi, a 60-year-old U.S. resident, has not been seen since entering the building on 2 October to get documents for his wedding. The newspaper said Turkish officials have shared evidence, including details of an audio recording, with both Saudi and USA officials. Khashoggi was a USA resident who wrote columns for the Washington Post and he was critical of the Saudi government, calling for reforms.

"I do not want to do that", Trump said in an interview on Fox Business Network when asked if the United States would walk away from its Gulf ally, reiterating his hopes that Saudi leaders were not involved in the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi.

However, unconfirmed reports in the USA media suggest Saudi Arabia is preparing to admit that Mr Khashoggi died as a result of an interrogation that went wrong and that the original intention had been to abduct him.

At least a dozen officials arrived in unmarked police cars at 6pm local time and mingled outside the building before filing inside.

Worldwide leaders and business executives are severing or rethinking ties to the Saudi government after Khashoggi's high-profile disappearance.

Many members of the US Congress, which has long had a testy relationship with Saudi Arabia, have issued strong criticism of the kingdom over the case.

It comes as police who searched the nearby Saudi consulate found evidence dissident writer Jamal Khashoggi died there, according to a senior Turkish official. They provided no further details.

But Riyadh insists that the journalist, a known critic of Saudi King Salman, had left the building and that murder claims are "baseless".

Despite concerns about Saudi human rights, Trump still says he is unwilling to pull out of arms sales accords with Riyadh.

The crown prince also agreed on the need for an investigation that "provides answers", she said.

Bin Salman was with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Saudi Arabia during that call. "Saudi Arabia, if you're listening, there are a lot of good people you can choose, but MBS has tainted your country and tainted himself".

"We are sadly and anxiously following the conflicting news regarding the fate of our father after losing contact with him two weeks ago, when he disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul".

Turkish officials have said Saudi agents killed Khashoggi. The person wasn't authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity. European allies have urged "a credible investigation" and accountability for those responsible.

Khashoggi, a familiar face on Arab talk shows, moved to the United States previous year fearing retribution for his criticism of Prince Mohammed, who has cracked down on dissent with arrests.

The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday night that Turkish officials claim Khashoggi was beaten, drugged, killed and dismembered in the consulate, in front of Saudi's top diplomat in Istanbul.

Officially entitled the Future Finance Initiative, the Saudi conference describes itself as an "international platform for expert-led debate between investors, innovators and governments as well as economic leaders".
