Jamal Khashoggi: Recording emerges of journalist 'torture and murder'

JPMorgan Chase takes part in a panel discussion about investing in Detroit at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in Cambridge

President Donald Trump on Monday said he talked to Saudi King Salman and had begun leaning toward the idea that "rogue killers", not agents of the Saudi state, killed Khashoggi.

He told the AP news agency that Riyadh was being treated as "guilty until proven innocent".

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said the United States should "sanction the hell out of Saudi Arabia" and slammed the crown prince, known by his initials MBS, as a "toxic" figure.

The disappearance and suspected murder of Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul has embarrassed Mohammed and strained relations with Washington.

The comment by the Turkish official to The Associated Press further intensified the pressure on Saudi Arabia to explain what happened to Khashoggi, who vanished October 2 while visiting the consulate to pick up paperwork he need to get married.

CNN and the Wall Street Journal quote unnamed sources saying Riyadh is preparing to admit that journalist Jamal Khashoggi died during a botched interrogation at the Saudi consulate building in Istanbul. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said parts of the building had been repainted since Khashoggi, a Saudi native who criticized the crown prince's policies, vanished.

According to the newspaper, one of the men has been photographed accompanying the royal on recent foreign visits.

According to The New York Times, the funds in question may help limit the damage the Trump administration could inflict upon the kingdom over the Khashoggi case.

"Canada has raised the issue directly with Saudi Arabia and we are talking about the issue with our allies".

Up until this point, Saudi officials have strongly denied accusations that Khashoggi was murdered, saying instead he left the diplomatic outpost on his own.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told journalists before leaving Riyadh on Wednesday that Saudi leaders, including King Salman and his son, the 33-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, "made no exceptions on who they would hold accountable".

What has Prince Mohammed said?

However, he apparently recanted after a phone call with Saudi King Salman on Monday, suggested he believed the kingdom's denial of having "any knowledge" about Khashoggi.

"They said it would be a thorough, complete and transparent investigation", he said.

"Answers will be forthcoming shortly", Trump added.

Trump previously warned of "severe punishment" for the kingdom if it was found to be involved in Khashoggi's disappearance, which has spooked investors. Only those politicians, media professionals and research institutes financially backed by the Saudi government will continue to support the crown prince, he said.

Concern over Khashoggi's disappearance has prompted media organizations and a growing number of guests to pull out of a "Davos in the Desert" investment conference set for October 23-25, which has become the biggest show for investors to promote Prince Mohammed's reform vision.

The recent, highly charged exchange of words between Washington and Riyadh now appears to have given way to a mutual search for the least bad explanation.

He says Iran would be the prime beneficiary if the Saudi's were to lose their defensive United States umbrella. President Trump is also correct when he says thousands of USA jobs would be lost, with China and Russian Federation to be among those lining up to replace them.

Flight records, obtained by ABC News show two private planes from Saudi Arabia, arriving in Istanbul and departing the same day.
