IOS app to help knee-replacement patients with post-op care

Your Apple Watch could monitor how you’re recovering after a hip op

Patients will use Zimmer Biomet mymobility with the Apple Watch and researchers will gather patient-reported feedback as well as continuous health and activity data to examine the app's impact.

Zimmer Biomet Holdings, Inc., a global leader in musculoskeletal healthcare, is working with Apple by using Apple Watch and iPhone to change the patient journey for two of the most common surgeries Americans undergo each year - knee and hip replacement. The study, which launches Monday, could have as many as 10,000 participants in the US, Zimmer Biomet said.

Zimmer is a USA -based company with operations in more 25 countries. The Apple Watch will work with this app by gathering step and heart rate data.

"We believe one of the best ways to empower consumers is by giving them the ability to use their health and activity information to improve their own care", said Apple COO Jeff Williams in a statement.

They have also created a mobile app called Mymobility, which includes learning resources, exercise videos, and a means by which patients can easily contact their care team with concerns. However, the app will be released publicly some time in the future.

Zimmer Biomet isn't exactly a household name, but it is among the largest manufacturers of the medical components used in knee and hip replacements. By contributing to a related study, Apple is getting involved in one of the biggest and fastest-growing segments of medicine.

Rival Fitbit worked with Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles previously to determine optimal activity levels for patients recovering from hip and knee replacements. It's also another example of Apple's serious commitment to being a real player in the health care market. According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, at least 30 million people in the U.S. have some kind of eating disorder, and one hope is the new study reliant on Apple Watch could help researchers predict an episode of binge-eating before it happens.
