Instagram To Use AI To Stop Bullying In Comments, On Photos

Instagram is rolling out anti-bullying features

This is Mosseri's first announcement in his new role.

Allowing users to report content that potentially violates Instagram guidelines is no longer enough which is why the photo-sharing platform is now using machine learning to proactively detect bullying.

"Online bullying is complex, and we know we have more work to do to further limit bullying and spread kindness on Instagram", Mosseri said.

On Tuesday, the company said it is starting to use new machine learning technology to proactively detect bullying in photos and captions. When encountering such instances, the AI technology will detect the photos and won't act as an executioner but instead, it will forward such uploads to the human reviewers who will review and flag the photos and videos as appropriate or inappropriate.

Still, Instagram is attempting to promote better behavior with a new "spreading kindness" campaign featuring teen dancer and actor Maddie Ziegler (of Sia music video fame), which encourages users to tag friends and spread a new camera effect with positive, uplifting sentiments.

This feature has started to roll out and will continue to in the coming weeks. To try the effect, you'll either need to follow Maddie Ziegler or find someone that has it and tap "try it".

Let's face it: Online bullying has become common with the growing popularity of social networking platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Additionally, the platform is expanding its bullying comment filter to hide crude comments from the Feed, Explore, and Profile tabs, as well as live videos (above)-"to ensure that Live remains a safe and fun place to authentically connect with your friends and interests", Mosseri wrote. If you switch it on over to the rear camera, you can add a filter featuring the hashtag #kindcomments, and examples of these in multiple languages.

From today, Instagram also provides a new function with filter that filters out offensive comments - now you can enable it during online broadcasts.
