Facebook hires former deputy PM Sir Nick Clegg

Facebook has hired former UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg to head its global policy and communications teams, enlisting a veteran of European Union politics to help it with increased regulatory scrutiny in the region.

Perhaps that's why Zuck had to give him the hard sell - according to the FT, the Facebook boss "wooed" Clegg to join the multi-billion-dollar biz with the promise he would have a leading role in shaping the company's strategy.

He, his wife and three sons will move to Silicon Valley in California next year. On Tuesday, four major United States public funds that hold shares in Facebook Inc supported a proposal to remove Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg as chairman.

In a statement on his Facebook page, Mr Clegg said: 'Throughout my public life I have relished grappling with hard and controversial issues and seeking to communicate them to others.

Facebook has suffered a number of resignations amid the Cambridge Analytica data sharing scandal.

It comes as Mark Zuckerberg seeks to fix the company's reputation amid rows over transparency and the role of "fake news" on the platform following the 2016 Brexit referendum and the election of Donald Trump to US President in 2017.

The 51-year-old politician was leader of the Liberal Democrats and formed a coalition government with David Cameron and the Conservatives in 2010.

Last week, the company said hackers had stolen personal details of 29 million Facebook users in September.
