Explosive device found in mailbox at NY home of George Soros

Founder of Soros Fund Management LLC George Soros attends the Boao Forum for Asia

A package containing what appeared to be an explosive device was found in a mailbox outside the NY state residence of billionaire financier George Soros on Monday, police have said.

"An employee of the residence opened the package, revealing what appeared to be an explosive device", the police said in a statement, according to the newspaper.

Soros, 88, is well known as a lightening rod for criticism from those who oppose his strong financial support for liberal causes. A Republican congressman accused him last week of paying migrants to "storm" the USA border, echoing Mr Trump's claim that Democrats are supporting...

Activists frequently post the addresses of homes Soros owns in Westchester County, north of New York City, on social media sometimes accompanied by ill wishes.

"The employee placed the package in a wooded area and called the Bedford police".

Online records showed that Mr Soros resides at the address but he was not home at the time, The New York Times reported. But earlier this month Trump did tweet that Soros was paying protestors fighting against the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Mr Soros was originally born in Hungary but made a fortune running a hedge fund after coming to the US.

A message emailed to Soros' foundation wasn't immediately returned.

Republican Representative from Florida Matt Gaetz also accused the billionaire of funding the migrant caravan that is moving towards the US-Mexico border.
