Caravan Forced Back at Mexican Border

Trump threatens to use military to close Mexican border as migrant caravan approaches

"It's a challenge that Mexico is facing, and that's how I expressed it to Secretary Pompeo", Videgaray told a news conference alongside his USA counterpart.

He called on Mexico to ensure the migrants do not reach the United States border while threatening Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador with financial penalties.

The caravan quickly grabbed the attention of world leaders as word of its formation spread over the weekend.

Now, Scalise says that Trump was "clearly ribbing" Gianforte for the incident, claiming that "not one [Trump supporter] harassed the numerous media reporters who were present". At times Mexico has stepped up its immigration patrols along the border, but it has had more success patrolling the roads leading away from the crossing where migrants catch rides or walk along the roadside. Only somebody without a brain wouldn't notice that that the money is just a little bit of help for such a long journey ... only an idiot would cross thousands of kilometers to get a 50 Quetzales bill [approximately USA $6].

The Honduran government has urged people not to join the caravan, but the government of Guatemala is powerless to stop its progress, as citizens of Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua can freely move between the four countries showing only an ID card.

Men float on rafts made from tractor inner tubes and wooden planks across the Suchiate River, between Guatemala and Mexico, on October 19.

A bridge over the river marks an official crossing point.

Mexico's peso weakened more than 1.5 percent against the dollar on Thursday, partly driven by Trump's comments, analysts said.

However, although President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has said he is confident that agreement with the United States can be reached, the Mexican government has denied that a deal has been done.

On the Mexican side of a border bridge, they were met by a wall of police with riot shields. Those who do so will be held "at a migratory station" for up to 45 business days.

After a week of walking and hitching rides across Central America, the first members of a 3,000-strong caravan of migrants were preparing on Friday morning to cross the Suchiate river into Mexico - despite threats of retaliation from Donald Trump. A complicated mix of pressures are weighing on Mexican officials as they decide how to handle the matter.

Mexico has rushed to contain the situation.

Pompeo said he and Videgaray spoke of the importance of stopping the caravan before it reaches the USA border.

The migrants hope to enter Mexico and cross the country to reach the United States.

A sea of migrants surged one step closer to the USA on Friday.

It's important to remember that for Mexico, migration isn't just about people coming into the country, Salazar says.

It's also about Mexican emigrants living overseas, many of whom are undocumented.

Mexico's ambassador to Washington, Geronimo Gutierrez, told Fox News that seven migrants had already made requests to receive refugee status in Mexico. Pompeo thanked Mexico for its efforts to address the migrant flow, including calling in the United Nations for assistance. So that makes any worldwide policy negotiations tricky.

Lopez Obrador, who takes office in December, said in the northern city of Saltillo on Thursday that he believed "an agreement can be reached" on the migration issue.

"How they're going to cross is what we're anxious about", he said. "We are not going to attend to the issue only with deportations or means of force".

"Honestly, I want to get to the states to contribute to that country, to do any kind of work, picking up garbage", he said.
