Boris Johnson blamed for rise in hate crime

Religious hate crimes in England and Wales increased by 40 percent in the past year, according to a report from England's Home Office.

The data showed that there were 8,336 religious hate crimes in 2017-18 - up from 5,949 the previous year.

Crimes targeted at people due to their sexual orientation made up 12% of the total (11, 638), with religious hatred at 9%, disability hate 8% (7,226) and transgender hate crimes 2% (1,651).

"Similarly, it is no coincidence that the type of anti-immigrant language used by some mainstream politicians has corresponded with spikes in hate crimes". Religious-based hate crime accounted for 9 percent (8336 crimes) of recorded crimes.

In effect, the number of hate crimes against the Jewish community was 24 times the size of its relative population. Based on data voluntarily submitted by about 15,000 law enforcement agencies in the US, the Federal Bureau of Investigation documented 6,121 hate crime incidents in 2016, up 5 percent from the previous year.

This is partly because of improvements in the way crimes are recorded but there have been spikes after events such as the Brexit referendum and the terrorist attacks a year ago.

The total number of hate incidents reached a record 94,098, from April 2017 to March 2018 - a rise of 17% from the previous year.

Hate crime is defined as "any criminal offence which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice towards someone based on a personal characteristic".

While the number reported to and recorded by police has been rising to record levels, CPS figures from a year ago showed the number being prosecuted successfully has, in fact, been falling.

Five strands are monitored centrally: race or ethnicity; religion or beliefs; sexual orientation; disability; and transgender identity.

It was also announced on Tuesday that despite the increase in recorded crime, the number of completed prosecutions fell from 14,480 in 2016/17 to 14,151 in 2017/18 - a drop of 329, or 2.3%. If so, it could lead to tougher sentences.

Ahead of the statistics, the government published a refreshed strategy for tackling hate crime.

It says the "increase is thought to be largely driven by improvements in police recording, although there has been spikes in hate crime following certain events such as the EU Referendum and the terrorist attacks in 2017".

Yvette Cooper MP, chairwoman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, said: "Hate crimes can be devastating for victims, deeply divisive for communities and dangerously linked to extremism".
