American, Russian cosmonaut bound for ISS make emergency landing after rocket malfunction

Soyuz MS-10 Launch Fails Due to Booster Issue Seeing Astronauts Returned to Earth

Search and rescue teams were sent to recover the crew.

Hague's wife and parents anxiously awaited word at Baikonur, accompanied the whole time by a NASA astronaut who was in the same class as Hague.

The three astronauts now aboard the International Space Station were supposed to welcome two new roommates today, but an anomaly a few minutes after launch sent those crewmembers speeding back to Earth in an emergency landing. They were due to return to Earth in December, but may now be stuck there longer.

"The Russian cosmonaut and American astronaut are feeling fine", the Russian space agency said.

"The boys have landed", Mission Control assured the crew consisting of one American, one German and one Russian. "And if that's a month, or if it's two months, or six - I really can't speculate on the length of it", NASA's ISS operations integration manager Kenny Todd, said. "Russia wants to continue a space partnership like it has been with the International Space Station", he says. NASA's Bridenstine said Hague, the US astronaut, had told him he wanted to fly again and that NASA had huge confidence in him but that he didn't know when he might fly.

Ovchinin and Hague escaped unharmed and returned to the Star City training centre outside Moscow on Friday.

Oleg Orlov, the head of the Institute for Medical and Biological Problems, Russia's top space medicine research center, said in televised remarks that the astronauts endured six Gs during the sharp ballistic descent. He added that space crew is trained to endure such loads. Hague was supposed to be one of the spacewalkers.

The launch failure marks an unprecedented mishap for the Russian space program, which has been dogged by a string of other incidents.

The RD-180 engine, built by state-controlled NPO Energomash, has been used for years on rockets built by two private companies: United Launch Alliance and Orbital ATK.

Abbey said he doubted the timeline for when commercial space flights would be ready to begin shuttling people to the space station, given all the testing and certification by USA authorities they face.

Thursday's aborted launch took place in the presence of NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine who was visiting Russian Federation and Baikonur this week.

Nasa said the capsule, which later deployed parachutes, took 34 minutes to reach the ground on the Kazakhstan steppe, hundreds of kilometres north-east of the Baikanour cosmodrome launch site.

"You can look back at the decisions that were made, like retiring the shuttle, like Congress not providing the funding in the first years of commercial crew, which has delayed the availability of SpaceX and Boeing".

Two astronauts from the US and Russian Federation landed safely in the steppes of Kazakhstan after their Soyuz rocket failed two minutes after launch.

Relations between Moscow and Washington have sunk to post-Cold War lows over the crisis in Ukraine, the war in Syria and allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential vote, but Russia and the US have maintained cooperation in space.

"It's an unpleasant situation", Titov told the Tass news agency Thursday. "This is a very hard business that we're in. The crew was rescued", he added. This caused the capsule to drop very sharply into the Earth's atmosphere. They landed on a snowy mountain slope and spent two nights in the cold before rescue crews reached them. However, the two sides have continued their cooperation in space.

While Russian rockets earned a reputation for reliability in the past, the recent launch failures have cast doubt on Russia's ability to maintain its high standards.

The head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, on Twitter pledged that the two men would still make it to the ISS.

Thursday's accident also comes as both nations remain at odds over the cause of a small hole discovered on the Soyuz MS-09 module attached to the International Space Station in August. He didn't say if he suspected any of the station's crew.
