Typhoon Mangkhut: Philippines lashed by winds of more than 100mph

Super Typhoon Mangkhut threatens China

Super typhoon Mangkhut is approaching the Philippines with estimated 167 miles per hour winds and gusts to 200 miles per hour, threatening a devastating impact to the northern tip of the main island of Luzon when it makes landfall on Saturday.

Worryingly, the strength of the storm resembles that of Typhoon Haiyan, a natural disaster in 2013 that left 7,300 people dead and more than five million displaced in the central Philippines.

Super Typhoon Mangkhut - the biggest storm of the year - smashed through the Philippines on Saturday, claiming its first victims as two women were killed when a rain-drench hillside collapsed on them and another drowned in Taiwan.

China's National Meteorological Center issued an alert saying Mangkhut would make landfall somewhere on the coast in Guangdong province on Sunday afternoon or night, packing strong winds and heavy rain.

"It felt like the end of the world... that was stronger than Lawin", said Bebeth Saquing, 64, using the local name for Super Typhoon Haima, which was one of the most powerful storms of 2016.

Some of these areas are home to significant levels of economic output, hence any hurricane force winds there could result in insurance impacts.

Super Typhoon Mangkhut is hurtling through the Pacific, boasting maximum wind speeds of 180 miles per hour that threaten millions of people across Asia in what is estimated to be one of the strongest systems on record.

Last week, the strongest typhoon to hit Japan's mainland in 25 years killed 11 people.

Ricardo Jalad, the country's civil defence chief, told an emergency meeting led by President Rodrigo Duterte that about 4.2 million people were vulnerable to the most destructive effects near the typhoon's 78 mile eye.

Philippines Airlines Inc. scrapped 41 Saturday flights, including those to Hangzhou and Tokyo, it said on Facebook. While parametric insurance protection has been expanding in the region, it is largely focused on the more economically significant regions and capital.

But authorities say they were better prepared this time in terms of evacuating and informing high-risk communities.

In Legazpi city in Albay province, evacuee Delaila Pasion said: "During the previous monsoon rains, half of our house was destroyed so I wanted to take my grandchildren to safety so they would not get hurt".

Tropical Storm Barijat is moving toward southern China, while Tropical Storm Olivia hit Hawaii with 45-mph winds.

Passengers planning to fly out of Hong Kong's worldwide airport on Sunday have been warned to expect "severe disruption".

A change in the typhoon's track prompted authorities to rapidly reassess where to redeploy emergency teams and supplies, Mamba said.

Philippine forecasters said the shifting typhoon could possibly blow toward Vietnam after it exits late Saturday or early Sunday.

It will make another landfall over the east coast of China as a Cat 4 Typhoon.

Around 12,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying parts of China's Guangdong province and shipping halted, according to state media.
