Trump Responds to 'Nervous Mess' Jamie Dimon's Comments

US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office

Trump, for his part, was not amused by Dimon's claim that he could best him in a general election, writing on Twitter that the banker doesn't have the "aptitude" or "smarts" and is moreover a "nervous mess" when speaking in public.

President Donald Trump lashed out at JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon early Thursday morning, following Dimon's comments that he could beat Trump in an election. "I've made a lot of bankers, and others, look much smarter than they are with my great economic policy!"

Trump's tweet came in response to comments made by Dimon on Wednesday.

Trump appeared to be responding to Dimon's remarks first reported by CNBC on Wednesday, in which he told reporters at JPMorgan headquarters in NY that "I think I could beat Trump".

But the JPMorgan executive later issued a statement saying that he isn't running for president.

"I think I could beat Trump", Dimon, a Democrat, said Wednesday, according to a transcript posted by CNBC. "He could punch me all he wants, it wouldn't work with me".

"I should not have said it", he said.

Dimon had also told the crowd that he had "actually earned [my] money" and that it "wasn't a gift from daddy," lobbying yet another jab at Trump.

Dimon was a member of the president's strategy and policy forum - a council of USA business leaders - which disbanded a year ago in the backlash to Trump's response to a white-supremacist rally in Charlottesville.
