Texas border patrol agent accused of killing 4 women, abducting another

A US Border Patrol agent has been arrested in the state of Texas on suspicion of killing four prostitutes reports say

The agent, Juan David Ortiz, was captured after a woman whom he tried to abduct escaped, Webb County District Attorney Isidro Alaniz said at a news conference.

Ortiz will be charged with four counts of murder and one count of aggravated kidnapping, Alaniz said.

The bodies of three females and one male were found over the last two weeks, sheriff's spokesperson Eduardo Chapa told CNN. Chapa said investigators are not ruling out the possibility of more victims. All five women worked as prostitutes. Alaniz said two of them were US citizens but the nationalities of the other two were not yet known.

But both Alaniz and Cuellar declined to discuss the evidence or say how the women were killed.

It was not immediately known whether Ortiz has an attorney. "We value the release of timely information and we are making this notice public in order to remove any unnecessary fear in the community", the statement said. "While it is CBP policy to not comment on the details of an ongoing investigation, criminal action by our employees is not, and will not be tolerated", the agency said.

"Out of respect for the victims' family and friends, we ask that deference and due process be given to the investigation so that all the facts are brought to light and they can receive the closure they deserve".

The victim was able to provide a detailed description of Ortiz, including his tattoos, Alaniz said.

The site where the victim was found is about a mile away from where Laredo's previous homicide victim was found about a week prior. Sheriffs, DPS, LPD and Texas Rangers assisted and about 30 min later Ortiz was found on the 3rd floor of the Hotel behind the bed of a pick up truck.

Cuellar said investigators have "very strong evidence" that he is responsible for the deaths of the four women working as prostitutes.

We have agreed to work together on the hiring and professionalism of border patrol agents. We also spoke about hiring more Professional Responsibility officers so that they can police their own.

Having just spoken with Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar, there is no doubt in my mind that the heroic efforts of these four agencies have saved lives; they are to be commended.
