Texas Board Votes To Cut Hillary Clinton, Helen Keller From History Courses

Texas Education Board votes to cut Hillary Clinton’s name from student curriculum

The Texas State Board of Education voted Friday to slice mention of Hillary Clinton and Helen Keller from the state's mandatory history curriculum - but will keep in Moses' influence on US founding documents, The Dallas Morning News reported. Among them are Hillary Clinton and Helen Keller according to a report from Dallas News.

As the first woman to nab a major political party's presidential nomination, Clinton appeared alongside Thurgood Marshall and Sandra Day O'Connor, among others, in a "citizenship" section of the curriculum in which students were tasked to "evaluate the contributions of significant political and social leaders in the United States".

The board wants students to continue explaining how the "Arab rejection of the State of Israel has led to ongoing conflict" in the Middle East, a requirement the committee recommending eliminating. And third-grade social studies teachers have long taught students about Keller's life of activism. She graduated from college and became an author despite being deaf and blind.

The vote, which was preliminary, came after a 15-member, board-nominated volunteer work group created a scale to grade historical figures, determining which were "essential to learn about and who wasn't", The Dallas Morning News reported. Items on that rubric included whether a figure "triggered a watershed change", whether they "represented an underrepresented group", and whether their impact will "stand the test of time". Keller scored a 7 out of 20. The group determined that removing the two women from the Texas curriculum will save about an hour and 10 minutes of teaching time.

In addition, the board voted to add famed evangelist Billy Graham back to the curriculum following his death in February. Some historical figures received a flawless 20 score.

By contrast, local members of the Texas Legislature (whom fourth-graders learn about) got a ideal score, as did Barbara Jordan, Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin and Henry B. González.

"Definitely didn't cut enough and I said it several times in the meeting this is an injustice its absolutely a disservice to our teachers and to our students because we are putting upon them very high expectations that reasonable humans can not meet", Perez said. These decisions aren't set in stone: There's still a chance for the BOE to make changes before a final November vote.
