What spooked the animal was not officially confirmed, though one witness told KDKA that a child threw a shovel near the camel's feet, "which startled" the animal.

For a few seconds the arena became a circus indeed, with audience members shrieking as workers rushed to contain the renegade camel.

A camel got spooked while carrying three riders at the Shrine Circus in Pittsburgh's PPG Paints Arena. The newspaper says one child's arm was broken, which appeared to be the most serious injury.

Shriners International-an organization devoted to doing good-should dissociate itself from the egregious cruelty inherent in using animals for entertainment and the potential harm that it can do to children, who the Shriners very adeptly work to help in other ways. The video shows the camel bucking and throwing the children off its back.

The circus was on its third and final day.

In a video posted on social media, an announcer may perchance also be heard pronouncing, "Ladies and gentlemen, dwell detached, please". Slowly leave the arena floor if you feel safer.

And animal rights group Humane Action Pittsburgh added: 'This is yet another reason animal circuses should be banned. "Animal circuses, especially those whom the Syria Shrine Circus subcontracts their animals from, have a long history of animal abuse and public safety violations", the statement said in part. The Missoula Shrine Circus dropped wild-animal acts, Shrine circuses in Canada haven't used wild animals in years, the Orillia Shrine Club abandoned its longtime circus and instead held an Oktoberfest fundraiser, and the Jerusalem Shriners recently announced their decision never again to host an animal circus.
