Severe thunderstorms possible Friday

Damaging wind gusts are expected this afternoon. The strongest wind gusts are expected from this afternoon into early this evening.

The forecast is calling for high winds across a large area of Southern Ontario, with special statements and wind warnings stretching from Windsor to the Quebec border.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Region of Waterloo and Wellington County for Friday.

Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur, Environment Canada stated.

More showers or thunderstorms end in the evening as southwesterly winds at 40 km/h gusting to 70 switch to a northwesterly breeze at 20 km/h after midnight.

According to the weather outlet, "Conditions are favourable for the development of risky thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain". Debris and loose objects could be sent airborne by the gusts, the agency warned. These possible storms are associated with a cold front. "Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes".

"Persons in or near this area should be on the lookout for adverse weather conditions and take necessary safety precautions", the agency said. "Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors". Winds will then diminish overnight, Environment Canada said.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
