DeVos was also the father-in-law of current U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

A spokesman said he died of complications from an infection.

DeVos, who served as Amway's president until 1993, also was involved in the National Basketball Association, buying the Magic from a group headed by Orlando real estate developer William duPont III in 1991 for $70 million. The company reported sales of $8.6 billion a year ago.

"Mr. DeVos' boundless generosity, inspirational leadership and infectious enthusiasm will always be remembered", Magic chief executive officer Alex Martins said. The company became the leader in so-called multi-level marketing, in which a network of independent salespeople buy products and sell them directly to people in their communities. He served as Amway's president until 1993 and bought the Magic in 1991.

DeVos was director of the Board of Home Ministries of the Christian Reformed Church and his faith motivated much of his philanthropic efforts including support of multiple conservative efforts like Focus on the Family and the American Enterprise Institute.

The following is a statement from Michigan Republican Party Chairman Ron Weiser regarding the passing of Amway Co-Founder Richard DeVos. He was surrounded by family, the DeVos family said. "He did that for his children and grandchildren, and for countless others around the world", a statement by the family said. The DeVos family is regarded as one of the most prominent in West Michigan.
