Rat Wipes $190M Off Restaurant Chain's Value

Xiabu Xiabu

The local market supervision authority has launched an investigation into the incident and the outlet where the rat was discovered has been shut down.

After video footage of the dead rat in the woman's soup circulated on social media, the chain's shares dropped by 12%, losing £145m in value to reach its lowest level since October a year ago, before regaining value.

The restaurant allegedly later offered the couple 5,000 yuan ($728) in compensation for the incident - a price he was willing to negotiate after the hospital visit, he told the newspaper.

The unnamed woman was out for a meal on September 6 in Weifang city, Shandong Province when she found the rodent in her hot pot broth at a branch of the restaurant chain Xiabu Xiabu.

When her husband alerted the staff, they allegedly offered the couple 20,000 yuan (S$4,000) to get an abortion if they were anxious about their baby's health, KanKan News reported. This revelation caused the offer to be upped to 20,000 yuan so that the woman could get an abortion. "I'm never going to eat hotpot outside again", said one user.

"If something happens to her baby how are they going to compensate her?"

A customer's sickening meal-time discovery has wiped $264 million off a restaurant chain's sharemarket value.

Health officials investigated the restaurant, but found no traces of rats. However, inspectors did find some of the restaurant's suppliers did not have the proper qualifications. "Is a life worth only 20,000 yuan?" one asked.

Xiabu Xiabu released a statement on Saturday night saying that it valued food security and would make improvements.

Hotpots are prepared with a simmering pot of soup stock at the dining table and contain a variety of east Asian foodstuffs.

In a statement, the restaurant said they took food safety seriously and were making changes.
