"For an independent filmmaker like myself to get this recognition is huge and a big confidence boost", Das said over the phone from her home in Assam.

Set in Das' own village of Chhaygaon in Assam, "Village Rockstars" is the story of "poor but incredible children" who live a fun-filled life. The announcement was made by the Film Federation of India on the morning of 22 September 2018, Saturday.

Indian Express quoted Jury member Anant Mahadevan as saying that Village Rockstars is one film that comes closest to worldwide standards.

Village Rockstars is a story about a girl named Dhunu, who grows up in poverty and learns to fend for herself. Since there was no crew, I did not use any artificial light. "All the actors, barring well-known Assamese actor Kulada Bhattyacharya, who appears as a wise man, are from my village".

An eminent jury constituted by FFI under the chairmanship of producer Rajendra Singh Babu chose Rima Das' much-feted films from amongst other contenders like Raazi, Padmaavat, Hichki, October, Love Sonia, Gulabjaam, Mahanati, Pihu, Kadvi Hawa, Bhogda, Revaa, Bioscopewala, Manto, 102 Not out, Padman, Bhayanakam, Ajji, Nude and Gali Guliiyan. And it remains to be seen if it will make it to the 91st Academy Awards. However, the Rajkummar Rao, Anjali Patil and Pankaj Tripathi starrer didn't make it to the final nominations. (1988), and Ashutosh Gowariker's Lagaan (2001) - have made it to the top five nominees for best foreign language film.
