Novak Djokovic hits Roger Federer with shot during Laver Cup during doubles

Federer, Zverev put Europe on top at Laver Cup

The two singles Grand Slam champions were playing in the Laver Cup exhibition tournament for Team Europe, who had already taken a 3-0 lead over Team World.

Team World's Jack Sock and Kevin Anderson needed a tiebreaker to defeat the doubles dream team of Federer and Djokovic 6-7, 6-3, 10-6.

Team Europe won the first three matches of the day.

The lack of experience in doubles again showed up as Federer and Djokovic failed to match up the doubles specialist Sock and his partner Anderson.

British No.1 Kyle Edmund found himself in a much tighter encounter with American Jack Sock, which went with serve for the opening nine games of the first set.

The current Wimbledon and US Open champion was quick to see the amusing side, however, and immediately rushed to Federer's aid before giving him a hearty rub on the back to make amends.

Sock and Anderson levelled the match and having seen their team-mates lose in two deciders earlier in the day, the pair made sure not to waste their opportunity when Federer double-faulted at 4-4.

Earlier in the day, Europe's Dimitrov cruised past Frances Tiafoe 6-1, 6-4, Goffin saved two match points to outlast Diego Schwartzman 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 and Edmund toppled World's Sock 6-4, 5-7, 10-6.

Schwartzman and Isner will be representing Team World in the second instalment of the Laver Cup from Chicago this weekend.

"That's why we don't play doubles, right?"

Federer, Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Dimitrov, Goffin and Edmund make up Team Europe. The duo won the tie-breaker 10-6 and the match 6-7 (5) 6-3 10-6 to earn the first point for Team World.

Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer played doubles together for the first time on Saturday but don't be surprised if they decide never to pair up again.
