Mitch McConnell Says Republicans Will 'Plow Right Through' Nominating Brett Kavanaugh

Trump Defends Supreme Court Nominee as Accuser Faces Deadline

Ford's lawyers said on Tuesday she would testify before the committee only if the FBI first investigated her allegation. He also retweeted other accounts accusing liberals and the media of overplaying the allegations against Kavanaugh.

The accusation has jarred the 53-year-old conservative jurist's prospects for winning confirmation, which until Ford's emergence last week had seemed all but certain.

"We know because Brett Kavanaugh is a good man", she said. Trump continued, "I go through this with them ever single day in D.C".

"She has been receiving death threats, which have been reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and she and her family have been forced out of their home", Ford's lawyers said in a letter published by U.S. media.

Through her lawyers, Ford said she wouldn't speak to the committee until the FBI investigates the incident, which allegedly occurred while Ford and Kavanaugh were in high school.

Negotiations over the terms of her testimony are continuing.

Republicans can confirm Kavanaugh without any votes from Democrats but given that Republicans control 51 seats to Democrats' 49, Kavanaugh's supporters have barely any room for GOP "no" votes.

Katz asked committee aides for a telephone conversation later Thursday to discuss terms.

To a room filled with conservative evangelicals, Kavanaugh is a like-minded defender of their shared values.

You demanded that the number of rounds and minutes per round of questions be equal for all senators.

Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has maintained that Ford needs to show up at a scheduled Monday hearing.

Taylor Foy, spokesman for Republicans who control the committee, said in a written statement, "We are happy that Dr. Ford's attorneys are now engaging with the Committee". The Committee will take Dr. Ford's and Judge Kavanaugh's testimony on Wednesday, September 26. Although Grassley's statement nearly invites this tactic, I hope that if Team Ford uses it, the Chairman will put an end to this dance and move the Committee to a Monday vote. Since even before the election, Trump has been fending off allegations of his own behavior - including a recording from years ago saying that, as a famous person, he could grope women with impunity - and lawsuits.

Kavanaugh, meanwhile, has said he is ready to appear on Monday (Tuesday NZT). They point out that the powerful panel is quite capable of handling sensitive matters, including confidential ones, such as the July 30 letter that Ford wrote to Sen. He wrote to Grassley: "I continue to want a hearing as soon as possible, so that I can clear my name". So, it's unclear why the White House is ride or die on Brett Kavanaugh.

The tweet was Trump's strongest indication of support for Brett Kavanaugh yet, after the president had spent much of the week vowing he would listen respectfully to Ford's allegations.

"I think it's a very sad situation", he said, asking, "Why didn't somebody call the Federal Bureau of Investigation 36 years ago?"

This counteroffer reportedly requires Prof Ford to testify before Judge Kavanaugh, which goes against one of her conditions. "But they've delayed it a week, and they have to get on with it".

While he steered away from criticizing Ford, he lavished praise on his nominee, calling him "one of the finest human beings you will ever have the privilege of knowing or meeting".

Next week could be a defining moment for more than just Mr Kavanaugh.

Where does Collins stand on Kavanaugh?

That's true, says Gregg Nunziata, former chief nominations counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee and former policy adviser to Sen. Vice President Mike Pence would break a tie. Kirsten Gillibrand (D) of NY at a press conference with Ford supporters from her former high school on Thursday.

Republicans have resisted all Democratic efforts to slow and perhaps block Kavanaugh's confirmation.

He said Democrats obviously want to delay the vote until after November's midterm elections, but he said there is "no way" McConnell allows that to happen.
