McDonald's workers across United States protest against sex harassment

McDonald's Staff In 10 US Cities Protest Over Workplace Sexual Harassment

The organization Fight for $15, which formed to fight for fair wages in the restaurant industry, organized the nationwide protest after learning about repeated cases of harassment that female employees experienced over several years, organizers said.

Organizers say it will be the first multistate strike in the US specifically targeting sexual harassment. She alleged that a co-worker verbally and physically harassed her, the AP reported. Since fast food frequently employs young people (often as their first job), numerous victims are teenagers. "I felt like I was outside my own body, watching what was happening", she said in a complaint filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

"We must stand with the courageous McDonald's workers walking out today to demand the company address this epidemic of sexual harassment", he said.

Last summer Tanya Harrell was working in McDonald's in Gretna, Louisiana, when she says a co-worker started making unwanted sexual advances. They told her she was acting "like a little girl" about it.

Responding to rampant alleged sexual misconduct and emboldened by the #MeToo movement taking root nationally, McDonald's workers across 10 US cities abandoned their restaurants at lunchtime Tuesday to take part in what is being hailed as the first multi-state strike to specifically target sexual harassment.

When she complained Harrell said her managers did not take it seriously and suggested there was some kind of relationship between the two and she should take it to the "next level".

The strike, scheduled to take place this Tuesday afternoon, will occur in Los Angeles and 9 other cities including Kansas City, Chicago, Missouri, New Orleans, Milwaukee, St. Louis, San Francisco, Durham, Orlando, and Miami.

McDonald's said there was "no place for harassment" at its restaurants. The teen reported it to her manager, who allegedly told her, "You will never win that battle". They are being backed by the Fight for $15 low-wage group and the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund, founded earlier this year to help provide lawyers for women who don't have the money to hire one. A warning for readers, what she said is graphic in nature. "We have strong policies, procedures and training in place specifically created to prevent sexual harassment".

McDonald's issued a statement saying they have engaged experts from RAINN, the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, to look at company policies so all employees have a secure work environment. Lawson said, "I'm a single mom, I want to set the right example for my child by speaking out about something that happened to me that is wrong".
