LeBron James Defends Serena Williams Following US Open Controversy

At the finals of the women's singles competition at the US Open on September 8 in NY, either outcome was intriguing to fans. But the story got hijacked by an umpire with a damaged ego.

But isn't the expression of nationalism we saw at the US Open a form of prejudice as well?

It was an unusual scene.

"She has to go into (those finals) as free as she is when she starts the tournament". However, Williams denied receiving hand signals from her coach, saying to Ramos, "I don't cheat to win, I'd rather lose".

Most of the 20,000 spectators that filled Arthur Ashe Stadium were all hoping for a win for Williams, who just gave birth in September past year, to show that even mothers could win titles. The tennis star was penalized for arguing with the male chief umpire, Carlos Ramos, after he gave her a penalty for consulting with her coach, which she said she did not do. At the post-match awards ceremony, William's acceptance of her second place trophy was met with thunderous cheers while Osaka received furious boos when her name was called. Her deal with Citizen Watch was signed right before the Open, but provided a hefty bonus for the win.

The code violations culminated into a game penalty, and she ended up losing the final to the young Osaka in straight sets. Williams, thinking she was free from warnings, smashed her racket on the court in a moment of distress, believing that this would only result in a warning. Did she simply explode because she failed to take advantage of a possible turning point?

During my time as a player, I felt the similar feeling like magma trapped inside your body that if you did not release your anger, then there was no way you could concentrate on the match.

Cristiano Ronaldo's reaction to his red card against Valencia on Wednesday has drawn comparisons with Serena Williams and her umpire spat at the US Open final earlier this month. Attacking an umpire's integrity, calling him a thief and a liar for doing his job, is a unusual way of showing your daughter that you "stand up for what's right".

Afterwards, Williams defended her actions, making the case that chair umpires treat her male counterparts with far more resiliency with respect to emotional outbursts in the heat of competition. Of course, Americans are sensitive when it comes to fairness. A lot of support gathered behind the 23-time Grand Slam victor Williams' claim. Perhaps a game's rules serve to level the playing field in more than one way.

While men can say what they want, wear what they want and act however they want, women in tennis are subject to the confines of a box delineating "proper" ladylike behavior.

Certain umpires are considering a boycott of some of Serena's matches.

'By the crude math that we use to judge couples, it sure seems like they both won-or at least, Williams and Ohanian are very good at reassuring us of this, ' Schwedel wrote. The fact that a match that many expected to be a spectacular clash of power and technique dissolved into such a debacle is unfortunate.

Williams made a reasonable argument when asserting that Ramos penalized her harshly because she was a woman.
