Jamie Murray: Serena US Open sexism claims far-fetched

Serena Williams confronts chair umpire Carlos Ramos during the U.S. Open final that she ultimately lost to Naomi Osaka

If it was wrong, it should prompt a discussion about what needs to be changed in either the rules or the interpretation of the rules to reduce officiating errors. Incessant internet and social media has made us more politically engaged, more woke. Now more than ever, sport has gone from recreation for the masses to a battleground in the increasingly unavoidable culture war.

Seeing this, Serena furiously called the umpire "a thief", causing him to list that as the third offence, "verbal abuse".

That, of course, was the catalyst for the Williams controversy as she was losing to Naomi Osaka in the US Open final.

Williams was handed a code violation for coaching early in the second set when Patrick Mouratoglou appeared to make hand signals to the 23-time Grand Slam champion from the player's box.

"Coaching is common, a lot of people are doing it, some people aren't getting called for it".

"I couldn't tell what was going on, because it was just so loud in there", she added.

I hate to sound whiny, but Serena's incident, whether you think she is a sore loser or not, should bring us to think about how we treat women who are not conventionally "ladylike".

World No. 25 Barbora Strycova has now said the blowup was motivated purely by Williams' desperate situation as she could see the match slipping away.

The Japanese player's breakthrough triumph in NY was overshadowed by an explosive row between her opponent Williams and umpire Carlos Ramos which resulted in the 23-times Grand Slam champion being docked a game and fined $17,000.

Williams, who lost the final to Naomi Osaka on Saturday, received warnings from Ramos for coaching and breaking a racket before being docked a game for calling the umpire a "thief".

Osaka, 20, heard boos when she was receiving her trophy and in the moment thought they were directed at her for her win against fan-favorite Williams.

This is a bulls***, for umpires being women or men doesn't matter. "I'm here fighting for women's rights and for women's equality and for all kinds of stuff".

'Men and women are different. For me, it blows my mind.

Due to her stellar rise in popularity, the young athlete is also expected to land more endorsement deals in addition to her current sponsors which include Yonex, Citizen and Nissin Foods. It was an infraction, whether Williams benefited from the coaching or not. She was called emotional, her rage labelled a meltdown, a tantrum.

And so we arrive back at that platitudinous phrase: stick to sports.
