Israel demolishes new Palestinian village, Wadi Al-Ahmar

Khan al-Ahmar is located eight kilometers from Jerusalem al-Quds between the Israeli settlements of Ma'ale Adumim and Kfar Adumim, which Tel Aviv wants to expand. Israel places severe restrictions on Palestinian development there and home demolitions are not unusual.

Eyewitnesses said Israeli forces arrived at the village in the illegally occupied West Bank before sunrise on Thursday and began taking down the newly built protest huts, without touching the Bedouin encampment, the fate of which has become a focus of Palestinian protests and worldwide concern.

The sensitive zone is part of the West Bank's "Area C", which makes up some 60 percent of West Bank territory and over which Israel has administrative control according to the terms of the 1995 Oslo accords.

Khan al-Ahmar is beside an Israeli highway that runs through the West Bank from Jerusalem to the Dead Sea.

The resolution also said the razing of Khan al-Ahmar would set a "negative precedent" for other Bedouin communities facing demolition in the West Bank.

Israeli forces demolished the "Wadi al-Ahmar" village in the Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar, on Thursday, which was built by Palestinian and global activists, in challenge of the Israeli High Court's approval to demolish the village and evacuate its residents.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) condemned the Israeli court's "illegal" decision, saying it was meant to isolate Israeli-occupied Jerusalem al-Quds.

Mladenov said the planned demolition of the village would "undermine the prospect for two-state solution and is against global law".

The Supreme Court rejected an appeal last week to halt the demolition.

It also stressed that the demolition plan is part of the regime's attempts "to try to legalize the crimes of the Israeli occupation and its policies which are based on the forcible settlement and ethnic cleansing of Palestinian residents of their land and property". Security forces were deployed to the village and construction workers began paving an access road that would facilitate the demolition and evacuation.

"They stayed on the outskirts of the village, an area where there were a few temporary structures that had been put up by activists in solidarity", Al Jazeera's Harry Fawcett, reporting from Khan al-Ahmar, said.

A top Palestinian official says the Palestinians have filed a war crimes claim against Israel at the International Criminal Court over its planned razing of a West Bank Bedouin hamlet.

Last week, Israel's Supreme Court rejected petitions to prevent the move, siding with the authorities who say the village was built without required permits, which Palestinians say is impossible to obtain because of the expansion of illegal Jewish-only Israeli settlements there.
