Iran vows 'crushing response' after gunmen kill 29 at army parade

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi said the 4 terrorists that attacked the military parade in Ahvaz had previously hidden their weapons at the venue of the ceremony.

On June 7, 2017, 17 people were killed and dozens wounded in simultaneous attacks in Teheran on Parliament and on the tomb of revolutionary leader Ruhollah Khomeini - the first inside Iran claimed by Sunni Muslim extremists of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group.

Fars news agency said the attack started at 09:00 local time (06:30 BST), lasted about 10 minutes, and appeared to involve four gunmen.

While the identities of the attackers remained unclear, a spokesman for Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps blamed minority Arab separatists for the bloodshed.

The Iraqi border crossing authority said Saturday that the Iranian side was temporarily closing al-Sheeb and al-Shalamcha border crossings between the two countries after the attack.

Top Iranian diplomat Mohammad Javad Zarif vowed to respond "swiftly and decisively" after gunmen opened fire in Ahvaz on Saturday leading to multiple casualties.

Arabs are one of several major non-Persian ethnic groups in Iran that also include Kurds, Turks, and Baluch. "There are several killed and injured", a correspondent told state television, which later reported that 20 people were wounded. Two of the attackers are dead, one wounded and another captured, according to its report.

Videos of the attack published on social media showed the parade disintegrating into chaos as people ran from a barrage of gunshots.

Civilians, including a woman, a child and a journalist, as well as soldiers were reported to have been killed.

"The injured are in a crucial state", the deputy governor of Khuzestan province, Ali-Hossein Hosseinzadeh Hosseinzadeh, told the semi-official news agency ISNA.

But attacks on regime targets inside major cities are far rarer.

The attack in Ahvaz came as President Rouhani was among dignitaries at the main anniversary parade in Tehran.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said those who have provided "propaganda and intelligence support" for the terrorists are accountable for the attack.

Iran has suggested that it could take military action in the Gulf to block other countries' oil exports in retaliation for US sanctions meant to halt its sales of crude.

Gunmen attacked a military parade in the Iranian city of Ahvaz on Saturday, killing at least 25 people and wounding 60 others.

The attack occurred a day before Iranian President Hassan Rouhani heads to NY to address the annual U.N. General Assembly next week.

Compared to regional peers, Iran has suffered only sporadic attacks in recent years.
