Interests elsewhere in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic states should monitor the progress of Florence.

The biggest threats from Hurricane Florence are life-threatening storm surge, devastating flash-flooding, and hurricane-force winds. According to the National Weather Service, the waves are produced by being trapped along with very strong winds moving in the same direction as the storm's motion. Persons located within these areas should take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other risky conditions. Coastal areas in both Carolinas have taken steps to evacuate residents and tourists, including a mandatory evacuation in SC. The storm was moving northwest at 17 miles per hour (28 km/h). Although this tropical storm will not be near Arkansas and Oklahoma, you may have family or friends that are in the unsafe path. Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion. A watch is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds, conditions that make outside preparations hard or unsafe.

A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours.

Forecast models predict Florence's center may slow to a crawl just off North Carolina early Friday and make a southwesterly turn - punishing the coast while moving perhaps only 2 to 3 miles per hour.

The National Hurricane Center's best guess was that Florence would blow ashore as early as Friday afternoon around the North Carolina-South Carolina line, then push its rainy way westward with a potential for catastrophic inland flooding. The port in Charleston, South Carolina, though, was suspending operations from Thursday through Saturday and possibly on Sunday.
