How Waffle House Will Help Determine How Bad Florence Is

Waffle House Storm Center activates for Florence

Waffle House has always been a popular spot for round-the-clock comfort food for locals and travelers alike throughout the South. In Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, an employee of a still-operating Waffle House told a reporter that during 2016's Hurricane Matthew, the location closed only after the ceiling tiles began to fall.

Pat Warner, director of public relations at the Waffle House chatted with Baldwin about how pivotal the index is.

Presumably, the Waffle House storm preparedness team is discussing how big of a tree has to crash through their roof and crush their flat top grill before the menu becomes waffles only.

Warner said the index was created in 2004, and because people rely on the Waffle House throughout the year, they expect it to be opened after a storm. Really. This is because the restaurant is known for staying open through nearly anything - from a storm to a holiday.

So remember, if you're in the middle of a natural disaster but you see an open Waffle House, you're actually completely and totally safe, and you should go have some waffles.

The company's emergency response plan was set up in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, which destroyed seven Waffle House restaurants and forced 100 more to close in 2005.

While it may sound silly, one of the tools the Federal Emergency Management Agency informally uses to decide how bad a storm is and if it warrants evacuations is the status of Waffle House.

One of the things that people know is that Waffle House is normally open.

Here's hoping all the residents of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, have evacuated the city: Their Waffle House just hit Code Red.

Waffle House tweeted Tuesday that its storm center was activated and monitoring Florence, but it was not clear which locations in the hurricane's path were expected to close. "The sooner restaurants, grocery and corner stores, or banks can re-open, the sooner local economies will start generating revenue again - signaling a stronger recovery for that community", the FEMA blog says. We name it red.

"They are open most of the time". "Within the occasion that they're green, we're correct, defend going. Within the occasion that they're originate however luxuriate in a restricted menu, that is yellow", he talked about. You can't make this stuff up, and that's just a lot of pressure to put on a place that sells waffles.

A representative for Waffle House did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.
