Google overhauling image search, bringing Lens to Google Images

Google unveiled changes Monday aimed at making the leading search engine more visual and intuitive to the point that it can answer questions before being asked.

Evergreen content will show up more often. For example, if you're planning your next vacation, Discover might show an article about the ten most fun things to do when you arrive at your destination. Now when people use Google to search for certain celebrities or professional athletes, they will see a Google Story that shows information like the person's date of birth, recent highlights, and other content from the web.

Bringing all of this together is a new layer to Google's Knowledge Graph, called the Topic Layer. For these subtopics, we can identify the most relevant articles and videos... Starting this week, when you view an individual image, you'll be able to see more context about it via captions included from the title of the site containing it. A control icon on each Disocver card will also allow you to see more or less of that kind of content or topic. This way you can check out Discover and all of its new features any time you visit on your phone.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are core drivers of how Google will pursue its mission to organize the world's information and make it accessible to anyone, search vice president Ben Gomes said at an event in San Francisco.

Users will find topics joined by information from news sources (and the like).

What's particularly interesting is the links to other search engines at the bottom of the search results.

Again, Google says this Lens functionality in Image Search will be available in the coming weeks.

If you want the full retro experience, you can see what Google's search results looked like back then by searching "Google in 1998".

The search giant is also debuting a new "Discover" tool that will show up on the main Google homepage on mobile browsers, said Shashidhar Thakur, Google's vice president of engineering for search. Last year, it tested over 200,000 "experiments", making more than 2,400 changes to improve Google Search. Just tap the Lens button and Google will scan the image and do a search on it.

Collections is another feature for keeping track of long search journeys.

Early days of search were about software matching keywords or precise phrases to content on web pages, with typos or imprecise queries destined to fail.

It's good to know that Google isn't resting on its laurels, especially when it comes to Search.

"But, you have our commitment that we will make it better every day". "And that's why our work here is never done".
