Google brings new tools to manage content in YouTube Kids app

Geared towards older children parents can now let their kids view popular music and gaming videos via the You Tube Kids app

Parents don't have to worry about levels when setting up new younger children on YouTube Kids with the Younger Kids option the default for new profiles. Roday parents are getting even more control of the content their kids can watch.

The YouTube Kids new parent approved content feature allows parents to pick every video and channel available to their child in the app.

Of course, the new whitelisting feature and tween experience won't be ideal, YouTube said. It's now limited to Android, but will arrive on iOS some time "soon", YouTube said. In order to activate this feature, simply go to settings and open the child's profile. The approved-only content setting will disable search for the kid, with the onus on the parent to seek suitable content and add it to the account (see above GIF). From there, you can browse content and press the "+" button to approve any video, channel, or collection of channels you're okay with.

The biggest update, which YouTube first introduced in April, is the rollout of parent-approved content. The new "older" experience is only available in the U.S. at this point, but YouTube plans to offer it globally in the future. The Older profile is aimed at 8-12 year old kids that will allow for access to additional content including music and gaming videos.

YouTube Kids now lets parents whitelist videos and channels.

"We work hard to make videos in the app family friendly, but no system is flawless", the company said in a release. "It's always possible that a parent may find something they don't want their child to watch in the "younger" or "older" experiences. As we continue to receive feedback from parents and turn that feedback into improvements to the YouTube Kids app, we hope that all families and kids can create the experience they want!" Should you come across a video that you think is inappropriate for the Younger and Older versions, you can flag it to be reviewed by the YouTube team.
