FEMA To Test Emergency Text Messages From Trump

Trump Can Message You Directly On FEMA Alert System To Be Tested Next Week

It's only a test.

The system message distributed during the test will read, "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System".

Cell phone users may receive a text from President Donald Trump next Thursday as the Federal Emergency Management Agency conducts its first presidential-level Wireless Emergency Alert test.

The WEA system is already used to warn the public about missing children, risky weather and other vital information, FEMA said. "In other words, it's basically like an amber alert from the president when we're all about to die".

The WEA test will be sent through IPAWS, as part of the nation's modern alert and warning infrastructure that automatically authenticates alerts. Everyone will then receive this message in English: "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System".

FEMA says any compatible cell phone tied to a participating wireless provider that is switched on and in the range of cell tower should get the alert once.

The alert will be sent out on September 20 around 2:18 p.m. eastern time.

"If you separate this from the politics and personality of any individual president then this is a great idea and an wonderful use of technology to reach everybody if they're in harms way", said Karen North, director of the Annenberg Digital Social Media program at the University of Southern California. If this had been an actual emergency an official message would have followed the tone alert you heard at the start of this message. "No action is needed".

This is the fourth EAS nationwide test and the first national WEA test.

An EAS message will also be sent out at the same time.

In its news release, FEMA said it could postpone the national test to October 3 if the agency is dealing with a major weather event, but it have yet to make that determination. In a real situation, the system would be used to warn the public about unsafe weather, missing children, or another critical situation that may require you to evacuate or remain in place.
