Facebook takes dating app for a test run in Colombia

FACEBOOK

In fact, Facebook Dating is so cut off from Facebook proper that you won't see any of your existing friends pop up as potential matches. What's more, according to Facebook, this feature is especially meaningful for those on the hunt for long-term relationships as opposed to impulsive swiping. It also sounds like a significantly different service than the one that was described back in May, as it seems the entire service is centered around questions that users answer to let others know if they'd be a decent match.

As soon as any 18+ user comes up on Facebook, they will see a po-up notification of sorts, asking them to try the dating app, if available in their region.

At first glance, Facebook's take on dating looks like any other generic dating app. The matching part, where you can actually find dates, will come later once enough people have joined.

What's more, Facebook has linked its Groups and Events sections with Dating so that users can find even more prospective matches.

For Facebook, which has spent the better part of the past year encouraging users to make sure their time on the social network is "well spent" with more updates from friends and family, dating is the latest test of whether or not the company can add value to users' personal lives.

Company CEO Mark Zuckerberg initially reported the application at Facebook F8 keynote, popularly called F8 developer conference in San Jose, California in May 2018. "More than 200 million people have listed themselves as single in their relationship status on Facebook", Facebook Dating's product manager Nathan Sharp said in a statement.

You can send as many messages as you like each day, but you can only connect with 100 new people every 24 hours.

Throughout the product, there are subtle cues to reinforce this idea.

It should help prevent the kinds of mindless swiping that's become characteristic of other online dating platforms. Sharp notes that members of groups must opt in separately to ensure privacy.

Facebook is officially getting into the dating game.

Dating apps and online websites are plagued with fraudulent profiles, known as "catfishes". There's also a limit of nine photos you can add to your profile on iOS devices and 12 on Android, with pics and videos banned from your conversations with "interests".

Additionally, Facebook Dating will occur in a forum separate from the established Messenger function.
