Man drives car into crowd in southern France leaving two injured

Witnesses heard the driver shouted on the spot "Allahu Akbar".

The 32-year-old suspect, believed to be a local, sped towards a crowd of about 50 outside the bar at around 1am, witnesses at the scene told AFP.

There was no indication that the incident was terror related, the report said, adding that regional judicial police department has opened an inquiry into "attempted murder".

The annual grape-harvesting festival features bullfighting and attracts thousands of people each year. As a result of hitting two people received minor injuries.

The man was arrested after the incident at around 1:30 a.m. Friday.

Local prosecutors said that the man was suffering from "relative mental confusion" and had been taken to hospital. Police said the suspect's motives were unclear and nothing can be ruled out. The anti-terrorism police weren't thinking about the investigation at this stage, they stated.

France has been on high alert following a string of jihadist attacks in recent years, often by people who have become radicalised or claim to have acted in the name of the IS group.

The barriers were in place to prevent such attacks and prevented greater casualties, local security officers said.
