Deadline Extended to Saturday for Dr. Christine Ford, Kavanaugh Accuser

Kavanaugh sex assault accuser negotiates over US Senate showdown

Christine Blasey Ford has agreed to testify next week before the Senate Judiciary Committee about her allegation that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh attempted to rape her when they were teenagers, her lawyers announced in a letter to the committee on Saturday.

One major point of contention that is likely to remain: Ford's lawyers have insisted that she be able to testify after Kavanaugh does, not before, as Grassley has offered.

Ford's attorneys spent the day negotiating the terms of Ford's congressional appearance. They intimated to the news network that her dislike of small spaces and planes is due to trauma she has experienced.

"If the hearing proceeds, Republicans will be forced to walk a careful line in questioning Ford's account without alienating women voters ahead of the elections".

Sen. Grassley responded by saying, "come to us or we come to you" and implored Professor Ford to let the Senate judiciary committee know if she was willing to testify or not.

The allegations come in the shadow of the powerful #Metoo movement against sexual harassment and assault, and echo the 1991 hearings for conservative Clarence Thomas to join the Supreme Court, when his former assistant Anita Hill accused him of repeated sexual harassment.

Christine Blasey Ford has until today at 2:30 PM Eastern time to respond to the Senate's request for an answer on whether she will testify about her experience with Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. She said Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed and groped her, putting his hand over her mouth when she tried to scream, before she managed to escape.

"The imposition of aggressive and artificial deadlines regarding the date and conditions of any hearing has created tremendous and unwarranted anxiety and stress on Dr. Ford", Katz said.

The panel has proposed holding a hearing next Wednesday in which it would hear testimony from both Kavanaugh and Ford, according to a source with knowledge of the matter.

Friday was the latest in a string of tumultuous days for Kavanaugh, whose ascension to the Supreme Court seemed a sure bet until Ford emerged last weekend and provided details of the alleged assault. I want to hear her.

Mr Kavanaugh denies any attack occurred, and he said in a letter Thursday to Grassley, an Iowa Republican, that he was prepared to come before the panel on Monday to "clear my name" of the allegation.

The Republican-controlled Senate judiciary panel has struggled on how to proceed with Kavanaugh's nomination.

On Monday, Kavanaugh is scheduled to testify before the Republican-led Senate Judiciary Committee.

He tweeted, "if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed" by "her or her loving parents". "So I thought that the presidents tweet was completely inappropriate and wrong".

Ms Ford's attorney, Debra Katz, said Ms Ford couldn't appear on Monday as Mr Grassley had planned and proposed testifying on Thursday instead, according to a Senate aide familiar with the negotiations.

"They understand that the left has failed in this country in terms of convincing Americans that their ideas work, so they've resorted to imposing them on the American people through the courts", Perkins said, referring to the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion and perhaps the 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision legalizing same-sex marriage.

Ford's lawyers also asked that no outside counsel be allowed to question their client, a reference to GOP members possibly hiring legal staff - likely women - to question Ford.
