Brother arrested en route to airport to welcome Bobi Wine home

Uganda bans rallies by Bobi Wine supporters as he returns today - Entertainment News

Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi, who has been in the United States for weeks returned today.

Ugandan security deployed on the streets of the capital and controlled roads leading to the global airport on Thursday ahead of the return MP Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as singer Bobi Wine.

The charismatic MP, repeatedly arrested and allegedly tortured by police and soldiers last month, has become the biggest political threat in many years to Mr. Museveni, who has dominated Uganda for more than 32 years with little tolerance for opposition leaders. An official denied that he was under arrest.

Bobi Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, had sought treatment in the USA for injuries allegedly sustained during torture by members of the presidential guard, which Uganda's government denies.

He thanks "members of the public" for in his words "adhering" to police's guidelines issued on Wednesday for Bobi's home-coming after three weeks away in the United States from where he led an worldwide media blitz to criticise the Uganda government.

The official, who was not authorised to speak on the record, told Reuters news agency that Ssentamu, a prominent critic of President Yoweri Museveni, was "just being taken home". The Kyadondo East legislator was picked shortly upon disembarking from the KQ plane and security forces have whisked him away to an unknown location, reports George Okello.

Kyagulanyi attracted a youth following through songs critical of Museveni and his prominence rose due to an incident in August in which his driver was shot dead and he was detained and charged with treason over what authorities said was the stoning of the president's convoy.

The lawmaker, who has pleaded not guilty to treason charges, said he was beaten with an iron bar in detention in northern Uganda.

Social media users accused the government of taking draconian methods to keep citizens and opposition politicians at bay.

"Entebbe Airport Police has delivered Kyagulanyi safely in his home at Magere, Wakiso District". The legal basis for the escort was unclear, and Kyagulanyi wrote on his Twitter feed before flying home that he should be able to travel freely in his country. Since yesterday, police and the army mounted several roadblocks on Entebbe road - searching each and every vehicle going towards the airport. Police prevented journalists from travelling to the airport to cover the arrival.
