Beto O'Rourke debate; first debate for Texas Senator tonight

Ted Cruz Americans are 'Dreamers' also

Cruz hopes to serve his second term in the U.S. Senate since getting elected in 2012, while O'Rourke, a Democratic U.S. congressman, hopes to unseat him in traditionally deep red Texas.

O'Rourke's candidacy has drawn large crowds in Texas and a following among progressives nationally.

The Nov. 6 congressional elections will determine whether Republicans will retain control of Congress. Democrats need to win a net total of two additional seats to take the Senate and 23 to assume the majority in the House.

The race is tight with one poll this week showing Cruz ahead by nine points and another giving O'Rourke a three-point edge.

The UVA poll also revealed that Hispanic voters supported O'Rourke over Cruz by a ratio of about 2-to-1.

CNN senior writer and analyst Harry Enten lamented Friday how most polls show Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D., Texas) losing in his bid to unseat Sen.

"You see a lot more O'Rourke signs in affluent Republican-leaning areas than you might typically see for a Democratic candidate".

Cruz has been making his pitch directly to Texas' more conservative-leaning electorate, trying to paint O'Rourke as an out-of-touch liberal, saying at a recent campaign rally that the Democrat is trying to turn Texas into California, "right down to the tofu and silicon and dyed hair".

On Thursday, Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, a White House aide, toured NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston with Cruz.
