Australian cartoonist under fire for Serena sketch

Image Artist Blasted for Racist Depiction of Serena Williams at U.S. Open Image #2

After the Herald Sun published a racist cartoon this week caricaturing U.S. Open women's finalists Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka - sparking a swift global backlash - its creator, Mark Knight, said that "the world has just gone insane".

Knight said that he created the cartoon after watching Williams' "tantrum" against Osaka over the weekend to illustrate "her poor behavior on the day, not about race", The Associated Press reported.

In the Herald Sun, Knight drew a cartoon that showed Williams having an on-court meltdown during the US Open final and the umpire urging her opponent, eventual victor Naomi Osaka, to let the 23-time grand slam victor win.

Williams opponent, Naomi Osaka's caricature was made to conform to the standard European features even though she is Half-Japanese and Half-Haitian.

"If the self-appointed censors of Mark Knight get their way on his Serena Williams cartoon, our new politically correct life will be very boring indeed", the paper wrote in an editorial on its front page.

Mark Knight of Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper sparked a massive uproar on Monday when he posted his cartoon on Twitter.

The cartoon, first published by the Herald Sun has now gone viral with many people calling Knight and the publication for being racist and sexist.

Mark Knight, who drew the picture, was forced to deny his image was racist and shut down his Twitter account amid the growing clamour. That's the history. That's also what makes cartooning such an interesting thing to do and look at today.

'I think freedom of speech is so important.I hope that she can see the amusing side of it and I hope she is here in January.

Cartoonist Mark Knight drew this cartoon featuring a caricature of Williams, one which drew plenty of criticisms for its similarities to commonly-used racist stereotypes (to say nothing of its rendering of Osaka as white and blonde).

Umpire Carlos Ramos warned Williams for receiving coaching from the sidelines and docked her a point for smashing her racket.

Those cheeky wags over at Fairfax have had some fun at rival News Corp's expense, publishing a cartoon yesterday afternoon that spoofs the ongoing controversy surrounding the Herald Sun's controversial Serena Williams' cartoon. "Poor behaviour in any sport needs to be called out".

Tobi Oredein, a freelance journalist and founder of Black Ballad, a platform which aims to tell the stories of black women, told HuffPost UK: "As a black woman I was disgusted but not surprised when I saw the cartoon". I go through that thought process when I draw anyone. "I honestly believe that, in Knight's mind's eye, that is actually how he sees Serena - as a hulking, brutish simian rampaging in front of the world", Harriot said. She added, "He's never taken a game from a man because they said 'thief.' For me it blows my mind".
