Astronauts on International Space Station showcase power of Hurricane Florence in photos

Hurricane Florence approaches the US East Coast in a satellite image taken from space

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station say Hurricane Florence is so massive, they had to use a super wide-angle lens to capture photographs of the storm from space.

Astronaut Alexander Gerst also joined in the fun, explaining that the fearless space men and women need wide-lense cameras to take these incredible photos.

The video, taken with a high-definition camera outside the International Space Station, shows a "stark and sobering view" of the Category 4 storm as it moves in a west-northwesterly direction across the Atlantic. It's chilling, even from space.

'Get prepared on the East Coast, this is a no-kidding nightmare coming for you'.

The video tracks across the swirling clouds at the outer edges of the hurricane before passing over the eye. While the wind in the eye weakened, the storm grew in size and the hurricane-force winds expanding outward up to 70 miles (110 kilometers) from the center of the hurricane.

Florence is expected to strike North Carolina's coast on Friday, then drift southwest before moving inland on Saturday, according to Miami's National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Now a major hurricane with winds of 115 miles an hour and increasing, the National Hurricane Center says Florence's forecast track will take the system over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas Tuesday and Wednesday, and Florence will approach the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday.
