Android phones: Dialing 911 now automatically shares your location

Google's making it easier for 911 to find your location in an emergency

If you are indoors, for example, your Global Positioning System connection could be spotty, and sometimes the information sent to the emergency service provider is so vague that it's pretty much useless in tracking you down in a short amount of time. For Android users on Viya, our integration with West allows your more accurate location to be delivered more quickly with ELS to emergency centers through existing channels by wireless providers.

About 240 million emergency calls are placed in the USA each year, with more than 80 percent coming from mobile devices, according to the National Emergency Number Association.

Most T-Mobile customers with Android devices will now send location data from Google's ELS, but in markets where RapidSOS is integrated into emergency call centers, Android users will send the information through the startup company, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Almost a week after Apple's big reveal of its new smartwatch, which can detect a user's fall, track irregular heartbeats and call and pinpoint locations of emergencies, Google announces plans of its own.

Emergency calls depend on accurate location information, something the caller isn't always able to provide.

When you call 911, Android devices will utilize Wi-Fi, mobile networks, Global Positioning System and sensors to give operators a more accurate location.

Google and T-Mobile are teaming up to make 911 calls better for cellphone users. RapidSOS integrates with existing software at emergency centres in the United States to provide the location data Google said emergency centres using the service already have decreased the average uncertainty radius from 159 meters to 37 meters.

The new service uses GPS, Wi-Fi, mobile networks, and sensors to give a precise location when a 911 call is placed. The service initially descended on the United Kingdom and Estonia in 2016 and has since expanded to 14 countries.

In New Zealand, a person reported a fire but was unsure where on the highway he was.

Calling 911 from an iPhone will soon automatically share the device's location with 911 centers.

The technology can work on Android 4 devices and above.

The cyberattack slowed emergency response times as dispatchers had to resort to manual methods.
