Amazon considering opening up to 3,000 cashierless stores by 2021: Bbg

Amazon believes that its Go chain can quickly reach 3,000 inner-city stores

Amazon.com is considering a plan to open as many as 3,000 new Amazon Go cashierless stores in the next few years, according to people familiar with matter, an aggressive and costly expansion that would threaten convenience chains like 7-Eleven, quick-service sandwich shops like Subway and Panera Bread, and mom-and-pop pizzerias and taco trucks. They will then look to open 50 more in major cities next year and and up to 3,000 total by 2021.

An Amazon spokesperson said "we don't comment on rumors or speculation", in response to GeekWire's inquiry.

The ecommerce giant revealed plans (and a trial store) for its futuristic stores back in 2016, and opened the first Amazon Go location to the public in Seattle this January.

Amazon's cashier-free stores may be everywhere within three years.

Amazon may look for ways to trim that cost in future stores, Bloomberg reported, perhaps by limiting the grocery selection to primarily higher-margin prepared food, which would also require fewer cameras. The company is now considering narrowing its focus even further to freshly prepared foods that would appeal to lunch-time crowds - something that one of Bloomberg's sources likened to the United Kingdom chain Pret a Manger. Since then, the company has opened two more Seattle sites and one in Chicago, and has confirmed plans for San Francisco and NY stores. It would also change Amazon's business, putting more focus on its physical stores. However, with less staff and strictly dedicated to foodstuffs, which have a higher profitability than other retail goods, Amazon hopes to recoup the investment faster than your bog-standard food store.

Amazon, like many secretive technology companies, rarely telegraphs its growth plans. Reports in the past year about Amazon's plans have rattled incumbent players in a wide range of industries, including groceries, pharmacies and specialty office suppliers.
