A Giant Spider-Web Covers An Entire Shoreline In Aitoliko, Greece

A soft, white blanket of webbing formed near a lagoon in western Greece, reportedly allowing a massive mating "party" to ensue between spiders in the town of Aitoliko. Photographs published online show the almost 1,000-foot web stretching across a beach, according to the Greek site NewsIt.

A Greek beach has been turned into an arachnophobe's worst nightmare, as spiders have covered it in a web some 300 metres long.

Giannis Giannakopoulos saw the "veil of webs" this week in Aitoliko, CNN reported. Called the Tetragnatha genus, the spiders are just 0.7 inches long. "But I have never seen any spider webs this big in my life".

"The spiders will have their party and will soon die", she told Sky News, adding that the phenomenon takes place every few years.

Maria Chatzaki, professor of molecular biology and genetics at Democritus University of Thrace, said high temperatures, sufficient humidity and food created the ideal conditions for the species to reproduce in large numbers. Greek biologist Fotis Pergantis, president of the Messolonghi National Lagoon Park, told CNN that the webs will likely be there until temperatures start to drop and the gnat population dies out.

Speaking to Greek news websites, molecular biologist Maria Chatzaki said that the spiders are not unsafe to humans and she not be feared.

But this particular spider-web is one of the largest ever witnessed and, as the local scientists admitted, the increased number of mosquitoes led to the appearance of more Tetragnatha spiders.
