Yes, That Location History Button Is Useless, Confirms Google!

Google updates location tracking policy to reflect actual practice

At the heart of this small controversy is Google's Location History which, as the name suggests, keeps track of your location collected when you use certain Google services, notably Search and Maps.

The change comes even though a Google spokesperson maintained on Wednesday that the company had provided "clear descriptions" of all of Google's tools which may record users' locations. For one thing, she said, the page still makes no mention of another setting called "Web & App Activity".

Previously, the page had stated that "with Location History off, the places you go are no longer stored".

An Associated Press report revealed that even with the "Location History" setting disabled, Google was still tracking some user locations. It now notes, "This setting does not affect other location services on your device, like Google Location Services and Find My Device". Location history and general location tracking are different from each other, and switching off location history on Google Maps won't by default switch off all location data collection by Google. Automatic daily weather updates on Android phones can also track the exact location of a user. Google pointed out data can still be deleted. Turning that setting off that would in fact stop recording location data.

Most people take for granted that, nearly by default, their smartphones send their location to manufacturers and app developers unless they explicitly say no. The sad part about Google's tracking is that most users are unaware of the fact that their every movement is tracked by Google even when they have not granted the permissions for it.

Several observers also noted that Google is still bound by a 20-year agreement it struck with the Federal Trade Commission in 2011.

Google agreed to that order in response to an FTC investigation of its now-defunct social networking service Google Buzz, which the agency accused of publicly revealing users' most frequent Gmail contacts. "When you turn off Location History for your Google Account, it's off for all devices associated with that Google Account".
