Woakes and Bairstow grind India into the Lord's dirt as England dominate

James Anderson took five wickets for rampant England

They decide against reviewing it.

England lead 1-0 in the five-match series against the world's top-ranked Test nation. All-rounder Woakes registered his maiden global century, while Bairstow scored his 19th Test fifty as the duo shared a 189-run stand for the sixth wicket.

England had looked like wasting an inspired bowling performance that dismissed India so cheaply on a rain-interrupted second day.

India, who trailed by 289 runs from the first innings, were 17 for two when rain stopped play half an hour before the scheduled lunch interval. That followed a first-day washout in London on Thursday.

Jos Buttler was the one wicket to fall in an afternoon session dominated by the hosts, trapped lbw for a breezy 24 by the impressive Shami who claimed three wickets.

Earlier, England's top order again failed with openers Keaton Jennings (11) and Alastair Cook (21) falling in successive overs.

That brought debutant Ollie Pope to the crease and Surrey's talented 20-year-old showed no signs of nerves as he combined with Root to take the score to 77-2.

Thereafter Bairstow and Woakes dominated a dejected India attack with England scoring at nearly four-and-a-half an over in a positive batting display.

India's decision to replace pacer Umesh Yadav with slow left-arm bowler Kuldeep Yadav came into question as the tourists struggled to maintain control on a wicket that appeared better suited to seamers than spinners.

"As a bowling unit we tried but all of a sudden the ball stopped swinging", Pandya said. The wicket was Anderson's 550th in Test cricket and 100th at this venue.

"I was probably getting a little bit nervous", Woakes said.

"I went from 60 to 80 pretty quickly and all of a sudden started thinking about it".

Anderson was now just 12 shy of the 563 Test wickets taken by Glenn McGrath.

Bairstow looked set to join him in getting his name on the Lords' honours board, but the Yorkshireman fell for 93, caught excellently by wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik after he nicked a Hardik Pandya delivery.
