White House lawyer McGahn isn't 'a John Dean type 'RAT

Don Mc Gahn speaking at the 2018 Conservative Political Action Conference in National Harbor Maryland

His outburst came the day after The New York Times reported that McGahn is extensively cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible links between Trump's campaign and Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and whether the president has obstructed justice. The Times reported that McGahn and his attorney were anxious that Trump was setting him up to take the blame for any possible illegal acts of obstruction, so they sought to cooperate as fully as possible with Mueller's probe.

President Trump declared his administration the "most transparent in history" Saturday, saying his White House staff has supplied more than a million pages of information to Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigators.

The information McGahn provided included the president's attempts to fire the special counsel, and Trump's comments and actions during his firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, according to the Times.

Dean was White House counsel for Nixon, a Republican, during the Watergate scandal. The Times reported that McGahn told investigators Trump tried to assert control of the Russian Federation investigation, "giving investigators a mix of information both potentially damaging and favorable to the president".

"The failing @nytimes wrote a Fake piece today implying that because White House Counsel Don McGahn was giving hours of testimony to the Special Counsel, he must be a John Dean type 'RAT, '" Trump wrote, misspelling counsel.

Last year, Trump ordered Mueller fired but backed down after McGahn threatened to resign rather than follow his directive.

News of McGahn's extensive cooperation with Mueller is likely to complicate the already-strained relationship between the two men.

McGahn's cooperation could pose a significant problem from Trump and those close to him.

He added Sunday in response to Trump's tweets that he doubts the president has "ANY IDEA what McGahn has told Mueller". McGahn has openly expressed his frustrations, and signaled his desire to leave the White House months ago, but made a decision to stay on to lead the confirmation process of Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

Trump, meanwhile, appears to have mistakenly believed that McGahn would act as his personal attorney who would defend the president's interests.

The special counsel declined to comment when contacted by Fox News.
