Nadal will face the victor of the match between Marton Fucsovics of Hungary and Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland.
Wawrinka was back to his best having struggled this season following a second knee operation but there was no stopping Nadal, who produced some extraordinary sliced shots and forehand winners to leave the crowd in awe.
Djokovic began his tournament a night earlier, teaming up with Wimbledon runner-up Kevin Anderson to defeat Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov in a first-round doubles match.
"Of course I was not at 100 percent today", Nadal, 32, told reporters.
"The main goal of the tweet was because I was disappointed, obviously not for myself, but because there was so many fans and friends that wanted to come watch me on centre court and they weren't able to", Shapovalov said.
"I knew it was going to be a tough match".
Defending champion Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, seeded fifth, led Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 4-3 when the Romanian retired because of an ankle injury.
The two-time Australian Open champion Azarenka eventually rolled through the final three games to get the victory in her first Montreal appearance since 2014.
"I'm happy with the way I'm practicing".

Kyrgios and Wawrinka, while enjoying an amicable relationship now, were embroiled in a dicey moment in Canada three years ago when the Aussie alleged that countryman Thanasi Kokkinakis had slept with Wawrinka's girlfriend and WTA Tour player Donna Vekic.
Kyrgios, with green fluorescent tape on each kneecap, quit injured in last week's Washington quarter-finals, and he was treated in the second set on Tuesday for his chronically troublesome hip.
The 33-year-old Wawrinka broke late in the second set to level the match, and completed his fightback on a second match point as he also broke in the 12th game of the decider. "So it's pretty self-explanatory", Kyrgios said.
A win for Djokovic would set up a potential quarter-final clash with German second seed Alexander Zverev, who advanced to the third round after a 6-4 6-4 win over Bradley Klahn. "I rushed a little bit on my serve, didn't take the time I needed and just became a little bit too predictable. "So that has changed and obviously feels good".
Although former world No 1 Djokovic wasn't quite at his best he still had enough to dispatch the Bosnian 6-3 7-6 (7-3) in 90 minutes.
American eighth seed John Isner, however, departed following a 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-1) loss to Karen Khachanov, while local favourite Denis Shapovalov went down 7-5 6-2 against Robin Haase.
His defeat was the third in three matches for Japanese players after less than two days of play.
Nadal will face Stan Wawrinka in the round of 16 after the Swiss rallied to beat Hungarian Marton Fucsovics 1-6 7-6 (2) 7-6 (10).
