Train season tickets to rise by up to £100

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling

A Greater Anglia spokesman said: "Fares levels for season tickets and standard returns are regulated and set by the government of the day, with the July RPI figure used as the basis for the following January's ticket price changes".

Transport secretary Chris Grayling has called for future rail fare and wage hikes to be based on the lower Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rather than the Retail Prices Index (RPI) which is now used to adjust regulated fares every January.

However, campaign groups argue the bigger problem is using RPI as the index to set prices rather than the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) measure of inflation, now 2.5%.

Rail, Maritime and Transport union general secretary Mick Cash said: "If Chris Grayling seriously thinks that front-line rail workers are going to pay the price for his gross incompetence and the greed of the private train companies he's got another think coming".

His call for a change in determining price rises has angered the RMT union who accused him of trying to impose a "pay cap" on its members.

Inflation figures will be published on Wednesday, leading to controversy over whether fares should increase at all given the disruption faced by passengers in recent months.

'What will really stick in the throat of the long-suffering British public is the fact that three quarters of our train services are now controlled by overseas operators with the profits from today's fare rises shipped across the channel to subsidise passengers in Berlin, Paris and Amsterdam. It's no longer a question of if our rail services are renationalised, it's a question of when'.

Protests around the country are set to go ahead amid frustration over an expected 3.5% increase in train fares as a result of using RPI.

The Scottish Government caps regulated off-peak fare increases at RPI minus one percentage point.

In January, the governor of the Bank of England Mark Carney said RPI has "no merit", adding that "virtually everyone recognises" the alternative Consumer Prices Index (CPI), which is lower.

Campaign groups have been mounting pressure on the government for a freeze in rail fares after highlighting the poor service felt by many since timetable changes across numerous main operators occurred in May. The men and women who run the railway are being singled out while greedy train companies are let off the hook yet again.

Where does the money go?

Pressure group Railfuture claimed train passengers are being treated like "second-class citizens compared to motorists".

Holyrood's opposition parties said it was unfair to ask customers to pay more given that they often have to cope with delays, cancellations and stop-skipping on ScotRail services. Stirling to Glasgow Queen Street will cost £2,230, up from £2,160, and for Manchester to Preston commuters, tickets will rise from £2,836 to £2,927.

Southern rail fares should at least be frozen due to the "poor service" recently experienced by passengers, Lewes MP has said.

Passengers can also save money by getting a railcard, travelling off-peak and booking in advance, although these options are not available for many journeys, particularly by commuters.
