Tiger Woods roars back into contention at USPGA Championship

Rose had a birdie on the 17th hole to take him level on three under par

Finau, who found himself clear back in a tie for 120th place after the first round, started off on fire with five straight birdies on Friday and he had moved up to even par for the tournament, right on the cutline after 11 holes when play was suspended for the day because of lightning and rain.

At the 17th, after ramming his eagle putt through the break, he missed the 4-footer coming back.

"I missed two putts on 10 and 12 and that stopped momentum a bit, " he said in a brief interview before getting ready for the third round.

To say Brady Brown of Robinson, Illinois came prepared with his attire for this PGA Championship would be an understatement.

Tony Finau completed his adventurous second round of the PGA Championship on Saturday morning, finishing with 10 birdies in a 4-under-par 66 that was just good enough for him to make the 36-hole cut at even par.

Woods had never played a competitive round in St. Louis before teeing off this week at Bellerive, so it's understandable that his performance this weekend has drawn a massive swath of patrons tracking his every movement on the course.

"I hit it good on the back nine, I just didn't make anything", Woods said. Six drives of 300 or more yards led to four birdie putts from 11 feet and in.

What was particularly encouraging for the 14-time major victor was the fact that some of his best swings came late in the day, including a bullet four iron to the par five 17th that set up a presentable eagle chance.

And then Charl Schwartzel made it 16 players with his eight-birdie round of 63. And I made sure on 17 I did. "I think we'll see some putts go in".

"You've got to decide what you want to do with it before you get out there, and it was a lot of fun".

Scott putt on a ball-striking masterclass, hitting 10 of 14 fairways and 15 greens in regulation to be ranked number one on Saturday (local time) for approach play. He'll have to hope for Koepka to stumble, which he doesn't often do, not once he's wrangled the leaderboard as well as he has at Bellerive. But he needed 18 putts on the back nine for a total of 30, and the difference between being closer to the lead. Without much cell service, with big, wooden leaderboards updated by hand and at a delay, it was easy to talk oneself into this alternate universe, these alternate standings.

Woods and Fowler were among those just happy to get off the course.

"It was a long day".

Woods is by no means the favorite.

Even with back-to-back bogeys on the back nine, Koepka had a 4-under 66 for a two-shot lead over Adam Scott, the 2013 Masters champion who has been struggling through his worst season in almost two decades.

U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka and former Masters victor Charl Schwartzel each shot 63, which matches the lowest score in tournament history, one that had been shot 14 times.

And so what? Tomorrow's shirts will be red, and tomorrow's tournament could still be Tiger's.
