Tiger Woods makes stunning charge but Brooks Koepka holds on for third major win at the PGA Championship.
US Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk unveiled the first eight members of his squad Monday, with the potential of a captain's pick remaining to add Tiger Woods to the lineup.
The automatic eight who will compete September 28-30 in France include Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Justin Thomas, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson.
He matches legends Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Woods, the last man to achieve the feat in 2000, in winning the US Open and PGA Championship in the same year.
Now, early next month after each of the FedExCup playoff events, Furyk will select his four captain's picks.
Perhaps the most shocking thing about Woods' score on Sunday was the fact he was utterly helpless off the tee. Rounding out the top eight is Webb Simpson, who finished T19 at Bellerive.
"He seems to rise to the occasion", said Furyk.
"I played 29 holes in the heat today and it was a lot on not just the body but mostly the mind, having to grind it out that hard for that long". And I feel like I've led a lot of majors with four holes to play and not won them.
Having ended the 2017 season in 656th place in the world golf rankings, amid persistent back woes and off-course issues that had more than a few fans wondering if he'd ever play competitively again, Woods has vaulted up to 26th after Sunday's showing.
Woods has already been selected as non-playing vice-captain of the Ryder Cup team.

"We want the players who are going to help us be successful", Furyk said. He finished 12th on the points list.
"I'm in uncharted territory", Woods said.
Tiger has never played a professional round of golf in St. Louis. Sixth place at the Open Championship, second place at the US PGA. His game - I think the word he used is 'trending.' His game is trending.
Woods provided the thrills Sunday - a fist-pumping, club-slamming, roller-coaster ride of a final round in which he threatened from beginning to end but couldn't knock Koepka out of the lead, or deny him the trophy.
Meanwhile, Koepka was making back-to-back birdies at 15 and 16 to get to 16 under and seize control of the tournament.
USA captain Jim Furyk unveiled the automatic qualifiers for his team Monday morning at Bellerive, a group that includes newly crowned PGA champion Brooks Koepka, who topped the points list for the biennial battle in Paris next month. He was not a factor in any of the majors, though he was regarded as a central figure in the team room and helped reshaped the US model for the Ryder Cup.
It's not just the American players who are digging the atmosphere. And there are no bigger moments in golf than the Ryder Cup.
The two true wild cards after Woods and Mickelson are much more up for debate.
Furyk will announce three of his picks on September 4, one day after the Dell Technologies Championship.
