The iPhone doesn’t spy on your conversations, Apple tells lawmakers

Hey Siri

The new AirPower wireless charger and iPhones are displayed in the showroom after the new product announcement at the Steve Jobs Theater on the new Apple campus in Cupertino, Calif., Sept. 12, 2017.

"We believe privacy is a fundamental human right and purposely design our products and services to minimize our collection of customer data".

Apple has responded to the questions [PDF] by assuring authorities that they believe in that privacy is a fundamental human right, and all their products are created to minimize the collection of data from customers.

Furthermore, Apple addressed customer data usage as well, saying that it "does not and can not monitor what developers do with the customer data they have collected, or prevent the onward transfer of that data, nor do we have the ability to ensure a developer's compliance with their own privacy policies or local law". The five-page letter to Cook asked detailed questions about how Apple collected user data and what it used it for. "Unlike other companies, Apple does not obtain a historical record of location data associated with a customer's name or AppleID for any of our services", he writes. The company clams third-party apps are not doing so either. The reports, as well as other information provided to the lawmakers, have apparently raised questions about the privacy practices of both companies. Apple's Siri is also found on the HomePod.

"Only a few weeks ago Apple announced changes to its App Store rules that were characterized as attempting to limit how much data third-party app developers can collect from Apple device users", the letter reads. Apple in the letter also laid out numerous policies it has shared publicly about its data collection and data use practices, which reflect what consumers see in the privacy policies they're asked to review when they buy an Apple device. That reflects what Apple has said in its privacy policies. Apple requires RapidSOS to delete messages that contain "Enhanced Emergency Data" collected during 911 calls, such as a caller's estimated longitude and latitude, within 12 hours after receiving it.

At the time, the lawmakers separately requested more information in letters about Google's Android capabilities and Apple's iOS capabilities. "The Committee looks forward to reviewing and analysing the responses as we consider next steps".
