Star Trek 4 In Trouble?

Paramount

The film had seemingly been gearing up for production, with Jessica Jones veteran S. J. Clarkson on board as the film franchise's first female director and Black Panther's Danai Gurira expected to have a key role. Star Trek 4 will make history as the first-ever installment in the longstanding franchise to be directed by a woman.

The article specifically suggests that both the Pine and Hemsworth roles could be recast, and in the latter case, that wouldn't be particularly jarring. Both actors want the studios to stick to their current deal.

The studios reportedly argue the property is not as valuable as Marvel or "Star Wars" flicks and that their A-listers should not expect the same sort of compensation. However, the studio isn't willing to do so, "forcing the actors to take pay cuts as they try to budget a movie that's following a mediocre performer". Paramount, still believing that this one might actually happen, has been negotiating with all the actors involved to lock them in and get to filming.

Both Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth seems to have quit Star Trek 4. His status for the fourth film is said to be "murky". After factoring all the other costs that come with making and marketing a blockbuster tentpole of summer, Paramount claims it lost quite a bit of money on that last endeavor. The 2009 movie made only $385 million worldwide, but it made $257 million from domestic receipts.

The Next Generation alum Brent Spiner, who played the android Data, heard the news he playfully responded that he too was walking away from Star Trek 4, tweeting "Me, too!"

Are you looking forward to Star Trek 4?

Paramount and Skydance insiders told THR that the film "remains a priority development and is not being put on hold".

Money seems to be at the root of the issue. Despite the new movie doing very well, there was no plan in place to fast-track a sequel, and audiences had to wait for four years until Into Darkness.

Karl Urban, Pine's co-star who plays Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy in the Kelvin timeline Star Trek films, responded to Spiner, taking the overly-literal approach.

Metro.co.uk has contacted reps for Pine and Hemsworth for comment.
