South Western Railway halt strike for further talks

Strike between RMT and South Western Railway has been suspended due to further talks regarding the guard guarantee

But National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) has suspended the action so talks can continue with the company.

A train strike due to affect passengers travelling on the South Western Railway network this weekend has been called off.

Rail union RMT confirmed today that it has agreed to suspend the next 24 hours of strike action on South Western Railway scheduled for this Saturday (11 August) to allow for further talks around the issue of the guard guarantee. South Western Railway say that they will roster guards on all services but that trains should be allowed to run in the event of one not being available.

"Northern is doing everything possible to find a solution to the RMT's dispute and maintains that talking costs nothing, whilst strike action causes inconvenience to customers and damages the case for long-term investment in rail", Richard Allan Northern's deputy managing director, said.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said the union remain "committed to negotiating a settlement" with SWR.

Although Merseyrail also remains in dispute with RMT, there are no strike days planned at this point on its services.

It includes not booking on for duty all day on three consecutive Saturdays: August 25, September 1 and September 8. The rail operator said talks with the RMT failed to reach a resolution, accusing the union of failing to accept the same terms agreed on another franchise.

Northern has proposed further talks for 17 August.
